Oshkosh is a city of about 67,000 in Winnebago County, situated on the western shore of Lake Winnebago — Wisconsin's largest inland lake. The city is known globally for the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh airshow, which brings over 600,000 aviation enthusiasts to Wittman Regional Airport every July and transforms the city into the busiest airport in the world for a week. Oshkosh Corporation, the manufacturer of specialty trucks and military vehicles, is headquartered here and is one of the region's largest employers. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh contributes a college-town energy, with about 14,000 students on the main campus. Other major employers include Oshkosh Area School District, Mercy Medical Center, and several manufacturing firms. Downtown Oshkosh along Main Street has experienced a modest revival with restaurants, bars, and cultural venues. The Riverwalk district along the Fox River connects to the lake and provides recreational amenity. Neighborhoods range from established homes near the university to newer developments on the south and west sides. Housing is affordable by any standard — median home prices are well below the national average. Lake Winnebago offers boating, fishing (including the famous sturgeon spearing season in February), and ice recreation in winter. The Fox Cities metro area (Appleton, Neenah, Menasha) is about 20 miles north, expanding employment options. Like all of east-central Wisconsin, winters are cold and snowy, but the community embrace of winter activities — from ice fishing to cross-country skiing — makes the season part of the culture.
